Today we celebrate the #WorldOceansDay!. This is an international day that takes place annually on the 8th of June. The concept was originally proposed in 1992 by by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

World Oceans Day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008. The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans. They are a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere.

The theme of UN World Oceans Day 2020 is “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean.” Innovation—relating to the introduction of new methods, ideas, or products—is a dynamic term, and one that is fundamentally filled with hope.

On the occasion of this date, CSIC has organized a webinar that will be broadcast today, 8th of June, at 12:00 on the CSIC YouTube Channel.

Jordi Dachs from IDAEA-CSIC will participate in this webinar. This online seminar will focus in the main challenges of ocean research for the coming decades, the CSIC´s leaderhip, the necessary resources and the expected impact on society.

The ocean is a fundamental element for the Earth and for the well-being of human societies. It has a decisive influence on the climate, impacting sectors such as marine ecosystems, the economy, tourism and human health. For these reasons our ocean is our future.
