On February 9, the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, Diana Morant, met the Ukrainian researcher Olha Nikolenko and her supervisor at IDAEA-CSIC, Anna Jurado, from the Groundwater and Hydrogeochemistry group, at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
The visit was part of a tour of the Ministry around different CSIC and CIEMAT centers in Valencia, Catalonia, and Madrid that have hosted 22 Ukrainian scientists, 15 of them women, since the Russia-Ukraine war began.

In Barcelona, the Ministry met the Ukrainian scientists Hanna Liventseva, hosted at the GEO3BCN-CSIC, and Olha Nikolenko hosted at IDAEA-CSIC who is working with Anna Jurado on a project to assess the hydrochemical coupled processes that affect contaminants of emerging concern in urban groundwater.
The Minister showed interest in Hanna’s and Olha’s research lines, their experiences at the CSIC host organisations, and their life stories. Olha expressed her gratitude to her supervisor Anna Jurado and the IDAEA staff for their support and integration into the scientific community.
“They leave very hard stories behind. In Spain, they earn a decent living, without interrupting their scientific careers. Maintaining this talent is very positive for Spanish science, but it will also be positive for Ukraine when they come back, which is what they are really looking for: rebuilding their country“, has expressed the Ministry, Diana Morant, in Twitter.
