Scientific Report
The latest IDAEA Scientific Report has been published summarising all the work developed during 2021 and 2022 on air quality and atmospheric sciences, water quality and management, ecotoxicology, hydrogeosciences, biogeochemistry of pollutants, and chemometrics. In 2022, the Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health concluded that pollution remains responsible for approximately 9 million deaths per year, corresponding to one in six deaths worldwide, with the main culprits being air pollution and toxic chemical contamination. By now, after decades of widespread denial, it is increasingly difficult even for the most sceptical to ignore the accelerating effects of anthropogenic climate change and global pollution.
“IDAEA has stood out at the forefront of these great issues of our time. Many of the key challenges resulting from this unprecedented environmental stress result in the sub-disciplines of our Institute. With our expertise in air and water, our goal is to emphasise not only the immediate threats concerning water security and cleanliness and the commonly poor quality of the air we breathe but also expand our vision to embrace the human-driven biogeochemical changes in the biosphere”, declares Teresa Moreno, IDAEA director
With more than 690 scientific articles published during these two years (84,4% in D1+Q1); 450 contracts, assignments & educational agreements; 20,4M€ as total uptake (contracts + projects); over 2011 people approaching our research through dissemination activities; and almost 9000 followers in social media channels, IDAEA keeps working to combine its atmospheric and aquatic biogeochemical skills with the strong capability in top-quality in-house analytical laboratories and experienced administration to step up for future challenges.
