More than a hundred professionals from the field of environmental quality and health from various institutions and scientific, academic, health, and public health associations, have signed a joint position on the ruling of the Superior Court of Justice of Catalunya (TSJC) on the Zona de Baixes Emissions (ZBE) of Barcelona.
“The sentence of the TSJC seriously damages the right to health and to breathing clean air of the population of Barcelona and the metropolitan area”, declare the group of experts in the writing.
The signers are part of the scientific community, fully committed to public health and the well-being of citizens, and have declared that pollution is a major public health problem that requires strong, permanent and evidence-based structural measures. science to protect the health of people, especially the most vulnerable. In this sense, they conclude that the ZBE is an intervention in the right direction, widely accepted in urban Europe as a measure to improve the quality of the air and advance towards healthier cities.
Researchers Xavier Querol, Andrés Alastuey, Fulvio Amato, María Izquierdo, Jordi Massagué, Natalia Moreno, and Teresa Moreno from the Environmental Geochemistry and Atmospheric Research (EGAR) group and Barend L. van Drooge, from the Geochemistry and Pollution group, have signed up the position on behalf of the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC). Other researchers belong to the Barcelona Public Health Agency (ASPB), the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), and other scientific centers, hospitals, and universities.
