The Global Change and Genomic Biogeochemistry group, from the Instute of Environmental Assessment and Water Reseach (IDAEA-CSIC), along with Instituto de Químia Orgánica General (IQOC-CSIC) and Universidade de Vigo have developed a project, called ANTOM, that will take them for a month by vessel to study the pollutants emerged by human activity in the Atlantic and Austral Oceans and how they are trasnported.

They want to analyse and understand how synthetic compound chemicals move and what effects they have in the antartic ecosystem. If the results show that this anthropogenic organic material is high, they could have a big impact in the current paradigm of the marine carbon cycle. They might also modify the current models of the cycle, a key to understand the adjustment of Earth temperature and seek tools to reduce the human impact on our planet.
