To celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11 February), IDAEA inaugurated the BCN Art-Ambient mural, a collaborative scientific-artistic project funded by the Barcelona City Council with one of the “Beques Premis Barcelona 2020”, which gathered science, art, and gender. The mural is the result of a one-year collaboration between the IDAEA Gender Equality Committee, the Communication Department, the urban art center B-Murals, the artists Twee Muizen, and the scientific, technical, maintenance, and administrative staff of our center.
More than 70 people from IDAEA, IQAC and CID attended the event, together with journalists and the neighborhood. The event started with a press conference with the artists and coordinators of the project. Alicia Arroyo and Diana Blanco, coordinators of the project, explained the motivation of the project and its objective; Ana Manaia, the coordinator of B-Murals, gave her vision on B-Murals as a key actor in bringing professional urban art to Barcelona streets. Finally, the artists Twee Muizen explained the creative process more in detail and described the visual conceptualization of each panel.

“The mural represents both molecular and chemical aspects, represented by the balls. With these elements, we also wanted to convey the human factor needed for scientific collaboration. All this framed in main axes of research at the center: air and water, and the impact of pollution on human health and the environment”, highlighted Denís, one of the Twee Muizen members.
Some of the attendees also got hands-on practice in creativity with one artistic dynamic, led by Ana Manaia. Printed postal cards about the mural were given to the participants as a gift.
The painted wall is visible from Joan Obiols street, in the Les Corts district, a Barcelona area with hardly any artistic interventions of this type and no mural to date. So, get your shoes on, come and enjoy this piece of street art!
