Title: Tracking the glacier meltwater of “Third Pole” fed rivers in space and time using isotopic tracers
Type of talk: General
Date: 28th June 2023
Time: 15.00 pm.
Venue: Sala d’Actes IDAEA-CSIC
Length: Long – up to 45min
Abstract:
The “Third Pole” glaciers seasonally melt, and feed many large river systems in the Indian sub-continent. This talk will utilize stable water isotopes to quantify the glacier ice meltwater fractions in glacier-fed Himalayan rivers to address climate change issues. We estimate 33.5 ±6.5 Gt yr-1 of ice contributions to the “Third-Pole” sourced rivers and quantify the meltwater dependence of many large river systems. I will talk about the challenges of isotopic hydrograph separation studies and the way forward. Finally, the talk will highlight a few of the ongoing projects focused on new paradigms of water quality monitoring.
Seminars are open to anyone. Punctuality is much appreciated since the seminars start at 12.00 p.m. sharp.
