To commemorate International Women’s Day (8 March), the CID Gender Equality Committee, formed by members of the Centre d’Investigació i Desenvolupament (CID), the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA), and the Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC), have organised three different initiatives that have focused on the role of women in science.

On March 7, Fernando del Blanco (CID librarian) presented a 5-minute trailer of a future documentary he is making about female scientists in the Spanish cinema (La mujer de ciencia y conocimiento en el cine español, 1896-2020). This work is based on a book written by him that will be published soon.

On March 8, 5 female directors of CSIC institutes in Catalonia, including the IDAEA director Teresa Moreno, joined together at the round table El liderazgo de las mujeres científicas to discuss the challenges and experiences they have faced in such leadership positions. Eloísa del Pino, the president of CSIC, welcomed the round table explaining the sociological studies that address the difficulties of women scientists to reach leadership positions in the CSIC scientific career. The panel was formed by Teresa Moreno (IDAEA), Gemma Fabriàs (IQAC), Teresa Garnatje (IBB), Roser Cortés (IIBB), and Elisa Martí (IBMB). The debate was moderated by the scientific journalist Jesús Méndez (Science Media Center España). More than 80 people attended the event and interesting questions from the audience enriched the debate.

Finally, during these days, the photocall “We do Science!” was installed in the main hall of the building. The photocall was in honour of the US propaganda poster “We Can Do It!” created by J. Howard Miller in 1943 during the II World War. All the IDAEA, IQAC, and CID staff were invited to participate, and a future exhibition will be developed with all the photos.
