The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) has organised four activities within the Science and Technology Week 2022 (La Semana de la Ciencia y la Tecnología del CSIC), celebrated between 11 and 20 November.
¿Cómo se estudian los plastificantes en el laboratorio? (How to study plasticizers in the lab?)
The researchers Ethel Eljarrat, Sandra Callejas, Julio Fernández, and Aleix Balasch, from the ON HEALTH group, did an activity for 15-year-old students from the Escola Solc on 14 November. They visited the laboratories where the IDAEA researchers conduct their scientific projects on plastic pollution and learnt how plasticizers are analysed.
This activity was made in the framework of the ‘Fes el canvi, Be Plastic Free’ citizen’s science project, funded by the Barcelona City Council within the Subvencions Pla Clima, and aimed to raise awareness about human exposure to plasticizers.
Analiza los contaminantes químicos en nuestro laboratorio (Analyse the chemical pollutants in out lab)
Students from the Santa Coloma School visited IDAEA facilities on 15 November to participate in two different activities conducted by Benjamí Piña, from the Environmental Toxicology group, and Bernat Oró, from the Chemometrics group. The students attended a talk about the risks and hazards of chemical compounds and then a practical activity on how these contaminants are analysed in a lab.
They also visited the animal facility to know how researchers work with the model organism zebrafish.
¡Bienvenid@s al mundo de la toxicología acuática! (Welcome to the aquatic toxicology world!)
On 16 November, students from the high school El Prat Educació visited IDAEA-CSIC, where Jesús Carrera, from the Groundwater and Hydrogeochemistry group, and Juliette Bedrossiantz, form the Environmental Toxicology group, made an activity about the importance and functioning of aquifersand the development of a toxicology experimental work to observe the impact of pollutants in aquatic organisms.
“La Ciencia según Forges” (Science, according to Forges)
From November 14 and until December 21, the exhibition “La Ciencia según Forges” will be exposed in the CID-CSIC centre with 66 boardsrelated to climate change, scientific discoveries and even CSIC. The artist Antonio Fraguas “Forges” used humour to talk about the daily life. This exhibition has been curated by the CID-CSIC librarian Fernando del Blanco and Gregori València, from IQAC-CSIC, with the technical advice of Jordi López, from IDAEA-CSIC.
