Dr. Enric Vázquez-Suñé, researcher at the IDAEA Groundwater and Hydrogeochemistry group, has participated in the UNESCO report for World Water Day 2022. He is co-author of Chapter 6 Groundwater and Ecosystems and has contributed to Chapter 7 Groundwater, aquifers and climate change.
World Water Day is held annually on 22nd March and focuses on the importance of freshwater and the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Every year, a new World Water Development Report is released on that issue. The 2022 edition topic was Groundwater: making visible the invisible, and took place in Dakar, Senegal. Groundwater represents about 99% of all liquid freshwater on Earth, and it is a vital resource that provides almost half of all drinking water worldwide, about 40% of water for irrigated agriculture and about 1/3 of water required for the industry. However, this natural resource is often poorly understood, and consequently undervalued, mismanaged and even abused, rendering it vulnerable to depletion and pollution.
